Dewar's Candy Shop, Bakersfield
Dewar’s Candy Shop in Bakersfield has been a family-run institution since its founding in 1909 by James H. Dewar and his brother George. The shop began as a modest confectionery at 1665 Chester Avenue and quickly gained popularity for its peanut butter taffy chews, later adding a peppermint version in 1911. After a brief venture in Ventura, the Dewars returned to Bakersfield and established their long-standing location across from Bakersfield High School on Eye Street in 1930. That same year, James began producing and selling homemade ice cream alongside the candy offerings.
Over the decades, Dewar’s has remained under family ownership, passing from James to his son, James A. Dewar, and later to grandson George, who brought in his son Michael to help oversee taffy production. This generational continuity has preserved traditional recipes and production methods while expanding the shop’s appeal. Dewar’s now serves a full fountain menu with sundaes, shakes, malts, and floats, in addition to its signature chews and chocolates.
The shop has earned attention beyond Bakersfield. Dewar’s taffy chews have been featured on the Food Network and in Bon Appétit, and its ice cream was once served at Disney’s Soda Fountain in Hollywood. Los Angeles food critic Jonathan Gold praised Dewar’s as “the best old soda fountain in the state,” noting the shop’s nostalgic charm and signature sundae presentation. A framed letter from Bakersfield-born football star Frank Gifford further attests to its local legacy, proudly declaring his love for Dewar’s peanut butter chews.
Beyond candy, Dewar’s offers seasonal gifts, branded apparel, and party packages, making it more than just a confectionery. It’s a long-standing part of Bakersfield’s cultural and culinary fabric, maintaining its identity through a century of family dedication and sweet tradition.
