Dover Transport Museum, Dover

If you're keen on vehicles, Dover Transport Museum is bound to satisfy your interest to the fullest. Spread across nearly two acres of attractive grounds, this museum comprises two large galleries showcasing over 50 historic road vehicles, from bicycles to buses, many of which are set in period street scenes.

Pursey’s Motorcycle Shop, in the museum’s main hall, holds a nationally important collection of motorbikes. There are some pieces of beautifully restored vintage machinery in Arter’s Workshop to admire. And if you're interested in boats, you can indulge yourself in the museum’s maritime collection which illustrates Dover’s remarkable history in the development of train and car ferries.

Speaking of trains, here you can find the Saint Thomas 0-6-0 Saddle Tank Engine from Snowdown Colliery (the prototype of Thomas the Tank Engine cartoon character), plus some working model railways and a new mini railway which is operational during good weather.

Also, among the exhibits are some rather unusual or unique items, like the restored Romany Caravan, and Aveling & Porter steam roller.

Other displays go beyond simply transport and offer a glimpse of old Dover's streets, like the old-fashioned shop fronts packed to the brim with period artifacts – from cameras to wireless sets, from boots to kitchenware – illustrative of the social history from the past 100 years; not to mention a fascinating WWII Anderson Shelter.

The variety of items featured in the museum is as much entertaining as it is educational, and promising of an enjoyable visit for everyone.
