Eglise du Sacre-Coeur de Balata (Sacred Heart Church of Balata), Fort-de-France
The Sacred Heart Church of Balata stands as a striking architectural gem, drawing inspiration from the iconic Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur in Paris. Often referred to as the "Montmartre of Martinique," this monumental church showcases remarkable craftsmanship and design, albeit on a smaller scale compared to its Parisian counterpart.
Constructed between 1923 and 1925, the Sacré-Cœur de Balata serves as both a place of worship dedicated to the devotion of the Sacred Heart and a commemorative site honoring those who served in World War I. The church's design features a Greek cross plan, culminating in a semi-circular apse adorned with a cul-de-four. An ambulatory surrounds the apse, providing access to the sacristy located within the bell tower, positioned outside the main structure.
The nave, with its three aisles and four bays, is adorned with barrel-vaulted ceilings, leading to the choir area, which is illuminated by a dome on squinches at the intersection of the nave's arms. Flanking the nave are two symmetrical chapels, with the north dedicated to Saint Joseph and the south to the Virgin Mary. These chapels boast semi-circular vaults and are adorned with small domes and apses.
Additional chapels, each housing unique features such as a monumental cross and original statues, flank the choir on either side. The main facade, facing the square, features a striking porch composed of semi-circular arches supported by columns adorned with capitals. A two-leaf door leads into the narthex, allowing access to the church's aisles and the staircase leading to the podium.
The exterior of the church is characterized by its use of andesite rubble and concrete, with stylized pinnacles adorning the ends of the main facade. A statue of the Sacred Heart in reinforced concrete crowns the facade, serving as a poignant symbol of devotion.

Fort-de-France Introduction Walking Tour
“The Bay of Fort-de-France is one of the most beautiful in the world — an immense sheet of blue framed by mountains of green.” These are the vivid words of Greek and Irish writer Lafcadio Hearn who intended to visit Fort-de-France for a few weeks in the summer 1887 but ended staying there for two years.
