El Corchito Ecological Reserve, Progreso

El Corchito Ecological Reserve, Progreso (must see)

El Corchito Ecological Reserve, located just southeast of Progreso, is a peaceful natural sanctuary known for its freshwater cenotes and thriving biodiversity. Surrounded by lush mangroves and native vegetation, the area is ideal for observing birds, reptiles, mollusks, and crustaceans in their natural habitat. Managed by a cooperative of 23 local fishermen, the reserve has been transformed into a tranquil family-friendly destination that fosters a deep connection with nature. Access to the reserve begins with a scenic 200-meter boat ride through narrow mangrove channels, setting the tone for a serene and immersive experience.

Once inside the reserve, visitors can enjoy a range of amenities designed for relaxation and nature appreciation. There are shaded palapas with hammocks, wooden tables and benches, and designated picnic and camping areas. A wooden bridge leads across the canal, while sac be paths-traditional limestone trails-wind through the forest, offering quiet opportunities for wildlife observation. Among the species that inhabit the reserve, raccoons are some of the most commonly seen. These native animals are accustomed to human presence and can often be spotted near the cenotes, where they forage and interact with their surroundings, adding to the natural charm of the experience.

El Corchito features three cenotes and two natural springs. "Cenote Helechos" (Ferns Cenote) is shallow with crystal-clear water, perfect for young children. Nearby is a narrow spring ideal for dipping your feet, and another spring that resembles a natural jacuzzi. "Cenote Venado" (Deer Cenote) is a bit deeper and accessed via the bridge, offering a picturesque view of the surrounding mangroves. Continuing along the sac be trail, you'll reach "Cenote Pájaros" (Birds Cenote), the largest of the three, with deep emerald-green waters that invite a refreshing swim.
