El Fontán Market, Oviedo

El Fontán Market, Oviedo

El Fontán Market is more than just a place to shop-it’s a landmark of Asturian heritage where tradition and modern life converge beneath a 19th-century iron-and-glass roof. Designed by architect Javier Aguirre Iturralde and constructed between 1882 and 1885, the market stands on the former grounds of the Jesuit College of Saint Matthias. Originally known as the 19th of October Market, it has since transformed into one of Oviedo’s cultural spaces.

Step inside and you'll be greeted by a lively scene of fresh produce stalls showcasing regional specialties: Asturian cheeses like Cabrales and Gamoneu, cured meats, wild seafood, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and the locally adored cider. Many visitors come not just to shop but to watch fishmongers expertly gut fresh catches or sample tapas prepared on the spot.

Outside the main market hall, Plaza del Fontán comes alive with an open-air market offering flowers, books, antiques, and handmade crafts. This lively scene has been immortalized in Asturian literature, notably in "La Regenta" and Ramón Pérez de Ayala’s "Tiger Juan". For the best experience, visit in the morning to see the market in full swing and relax with a meal or snack at one of the many terrace cafés that frame the square.
