El Paso Museum of Archaeology, El Paso
The El Paso Museum of Archaeology explores the deep human history of the border region, tracing cultural development across the El Paso area, the greater Southwest, and northern Mexico. Opened in 1977, the museum centers on archaeological research and preservation. Set in Wilderness Park at the base of the Franklin Mountains, it traces more than 14,000 years of human history.
Inside, exhibitions and life-size dioramas present the lives of Indigenous communities, from Ice Age Paleoindian groups to their modern descendants. Displays highlight hunting tools, trade, housing, and daily life. Rotating galleries feature pottery, jewelry, pre-Columbian objects, and rare textiles, including 800-year-old agave fiber cloth, reflecting long cultural continuity.
Interactive drawers let visitors closely examine artifacts from across the United States. The museum also offers lectures, conferences, and seasonal events, including the Annual Franklin Mountain Poppies Fest and the biennial Jornada Mogollon Conference, which focus on regional heritage and research.
