Fort Bliss Museum, El Paso
1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss Museum presents the history of an Army post founded in 1849 as the “Post opposite El Paso,” later named Fort Bliss in 1854. It highlights the installation’s frontier roots, its role in armored and Air Defense Artillery training, and preserves the history of the 1st Armored Division, “Old Ironsides,” which moved here from Germany in 2011.
Inside, exhibits trace the shift from cavalry to tanks and missile systems through uniforms, weapons, and personal items. Galleries focus on post history, the 1st Armored Division, and Air Defense Artillery, while Combined Arms Heritage Park displays tanks and artillery outdoors. The Old Fort Bliss Replica, covering 1854 to 1868, operates separately, and the nearby U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Museum is often visited as part of the same experience.
The museum is open to the public. Because it is located on an active Army installation, access procedures apply. Visitors without a military ID must obtain a pass at the Buffalo Soldier Gate Visitor Control Center, usually presenting a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Processing times vary, so checking current entry guidelines in advance is recommended.
