Elisabeth-Promenade, Zell am See (must see)
Elisabeth-Promenade is a lakeside walking route close to the Hundertwasser Österreich-Brunnen, also known as the Hundertwasser Austria Fountain. It offers tourists an easy way to experience the lake, mountain views, gardens, and the older resort atmosphere of the area. The name recalls Empress Elisabeth, or Sisi, linking the promenade with Alpine walks, summer retreats, and the rise of rail-based tourism.
The promenade and nearby park also reflect a less obvious story of transport and urban change. In 1875, the Giselabahn railway line improved access for tourists but also created tension between the town and the lakeshore. Railway expansion reshaped the lakeshore, and land linked to the former Hotel Elisabeth became public green space. Along the route, Weyringer’s eagle, ibex, and flower sculptures reflect Alpine wildlife and fragile mountain nature.
The nearby Hundertwasser Austria Fountain adds a modern artistic contrast to the promenade’s 19th-century associations. Its nine ceramic columns represent Austria’s federal states, with their heights linked to population size. The tile colors follow the Austrian state coats of arms and Hundertwasser’s vehicle-plate design ideas. Conceived in 1996, the fountain was installed in 2003 after his death, with Hans Muhr involved in its completion.
The fountain also works as a small ecological installation. Lake water is pumped upward, then flows down through planted areas and cascades, creating movement, sound, and a cooler microclimate around the artwork in warm weather. This living-water idea contrasts with the quiet promenade and lake. In the evening season, the Zell Magic Lake Show adds water screens, lasers, light, and music, linking historic lakefront culture with modern entertainment.
