Hotel Lebzelter, Zell am See (must see)
Hotel Lebzelter is a traditional family-run hotel in the historic heart of Zell am See. Its roots are recorded as early as 1482, when it appeared in town records as a working guesthouse. Over the centuries, the building served travelers, merchants, and holiday guests, but its role changed during both world wars, when normal hotel activity stopped and the premises were used as a military field hospital.
The building is known for its bright façade, painted details, and position within the old pedestrian centre. It is regarded as a local landmark and is often photographed by visitors because of its strong visual presence among the surrounding historic buildings. In 1927, the hotel installed an elevator that remained in use for more than 60 years, showing how the property combined tradition with early modern comfort.
Inside, the hotel preserves part of its older character through wood-paneled dining rooms such as the Große Stube and Hippolyt Stüberl. These rooms were carefully renovated in 1991 using photographs from 1927, helping restore their historic appearance. The Lebzeltkeller, opened in 1956, added another layer to the hotel’s identity as a place for food, drinks, and evening entertainment.
For tourists, Hotel Lebzelter is practical as well as historic. Its outdoor café terrace opens onto the pedestrian zone, making it a good place for coffee, meals, and watching daily town life. In summer, stays include the Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card, with access to cable cars, lake beaches, and boat trips. After skiing or hiking, guests can use the wellness area with a Finnish sauna, infrared cabin, and Turkish steam bath.
