St. Hippolytus Pfarrkirche (St. Hippolytus Parish Church), Zell am See (must see)
St. Hippolytus Pfarrkirche, or St. Hippolytus Parish Church, is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the Pinzgau region and an important historical stop near the Hundertwasser Austria Fountain. Its history is closely tied to the town’s origins, as the name comes from the Latin cella, referring to an 8th-century monastic cell founded around 740–743 AD. This early religious settlement later grew into a parish center, making the church part of the area’s oldest documented history.
The building preserves several architectural periods. Its deeper layers include an Ottonian crypt, while the visible church combines a three-aisled Romanesque basilica layout, an early Gothic choir, a large west tower, and a late-Gothic west gallery from 1514. The 1514 west gallery stands out for its carved stonework and Gothic forms. After the 1770 fire damaged the ribbed vaulting, a temporary wooden ceiling followed in 1794; the present flat ceiling dates to 1898.
Inside, visitors can see frescoes from the 14th to 17th centuries, once hidden beneath plaster and paint before later restoration uncovered them. Neo-Gothic altars, stained-glass windows, carved Gothic details, reused Roman stones, and archaeological finds add to the sense of age. These finds suggest possible pre-Christian ritual use, though this remains an interpretation rather than a proven fact.
The dedication to Saint Hippolytus adds another cultural layer. In Christian tradition, he is remembered as a martyr and later became linked with horses, animals once important to alpine farming, transport, and rural life. Near the Hundertwasser Austria Fountain, the church contrasts modern water art with stone, frescoes, worship, and medieval craft.
