Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilnius

Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilnius

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vilnius, Lithuania, has a rich history dating back to 1555, when it was built by the first German-speaking Lutheran community that arrived in the city. The church's small Gothic and Baroque design makes it a unique and historically significant building in Vilnius.

One of the church's main attractions is the stunning Rococo altar, created by Johann Christoph Glaubitz (Jonas Kristupas Glaubicas) in 1741. This exquisite altar is a true masterpiece of art and design, showcasing the intricate work of a skilled craftsman.

During the Soviet occupation, the church served as a workshop and a basketball court, highlighting the country's turbulent history. However, after Lithuania regained its independence in 1991, the church was returned to its congregation and has since become the predominant house of worship for the capital's English-speaking Christians from various denominations.
