Firehouse 12, New Haven
Firehouse 12, located on Crown Street in New Haven's historic Ninth Square District, is a multifaceted venue encompassing a bar, recording studio, performance space, and record label. Originally constructed in 1905 as a fire station for Engine Company No. 12, the building served the community until 1961. After over 40 years of vacancy, owner Nick Lloyd renovated it between 2002 and 2005, turning it into today’s vibrant venue.
The recording studio at Firehouse 12 is a state-of-the-art facility designed by John Storyk and Gray Organschi Architecture. It features a 1,200-square-foot live room with three isolation booths, offering clear sightlines between all recording spaces.
As a performance venue, Firehouse 12 hosts a biannual series of experimental and contemporary jazz concerts on Friday nights, typically running for approximately 13 weeks in the fall (September through December) and spring (March through June). These events feature both established and emerging artists, contributing to New Haven's vibrant music scene.
The bar at Firehouse 12 offers a full-service experience specializing in both new and classic cocktails, select wines, and a rotating selection of draught and featured beers. The kitchen operates until 10 PM, serving a variety of seasonal specials, small plates, and Italian piadina flatbread sandwiches. The bar provides a relaxed setting for conversation and refreshments, making it an ideal spot before or after attending performances.
In 2007, Firehouse 12 expanded its commitment to innovative music by establishing Firehouse 12 Records. Co-founded by Nick Lloyd and cornetist/composer Taylor Ho Bynum, the label aims to document and promote the creative work of improvisational musicians.
Over the years, Firehouse 12 has become an integral part of New Haven's cultural landscape, offering a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities that cater to both artists and patrons.
