First Baptist Church in America, Providence
The First Baptist Church holds the distinction of being the oldest Baptist congregation in the United States. Founded in 1638 by Roger Williams, a proponent of religious freedom and the separation of church and state, the church initially convened in members' homes and outdoor settings for several decades.
The current meetinghouse was constructed between 1774 and 1775, marking a significant evolution in Baptist architecture. Designed by architect Joseph Brown, the structure is an 80-foot square building that harmoniously blends the traditional New England meetinghouse style with English Georgian elements. Notable features include a prominent portico and steeple inspired by designs from James Gibbs' "Book of Architecture" (1728), particularly resembling the steeple of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields in London.
The meetinghouse's construction was a monumental endeavor for its time, representing the largest building project in New England during that period. Its completion provided a space not only for worship but also for significant community events. Since 1776, Brown University has held its annual commencement ceremonies within the church, underscoring the strong historical ties between the institution and the congregation.
In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, the First Baptist Church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Today, it continues to serve as an active place of worship and a symbol of the enduring principles of religious liberty and community that Roger Williams championed.
