Shakespeare's Head, Providence

Shakespeare's Head was built in 1772 by John Carter, the publisher of Providence's first newspaper. In 1938, after a devastating hurricane, the house and the surrounding garden were completely redesigned by landscape architect James Graham in the Colonial Revival style. Today the house is the property of the Shakespeare's Head Association and is the headquarters of the Providence Preservation Society and Junior League of Rhode Island. The name of the house comes from a bust of Shakespeare that was on display inside while John Carter lived here.
