First Unitarian Church of Providence, Providence

First Unitarian Church of Providence, Providence

The First Unitarian Church of Providence, established in 1720, was originally founded as the First Congregational Society, having played a pivotal role in the community for over three centuries. The congregation embraces a diverse community, welcoming individuals of various beliefs and backgrounds, united by a shared desire to make a positive impact. This ethos is encapsulated in the belief that "we need not think alike to love alike."

The current Meeting House, dedicated in 1816, was designed by prominent Providence architect John Holden Greene, who was also a member of the congregation. This Federal-style edifice showcases a harmonious blend of classical arches and urns with soaring Gothic elements, reflecting Greene's architectural ingenuity. The building's design was inspired by Charles Bulfinch's New South Church in Boston, particularly evident in the similarities between their steeples and windows.

Among other notable features of the church are its steeple, which houses the largest and heaviest bell ever cast by Paul Revere and Son, along with the balcony pulpit, which is supported by Ionic columns.

In the 1960s, the church underwent significant restoration following a devastating fire. Architect Irving B. Haynes led the reconstruction efforts, ensuring the preservation of the building's architectural integrity.

Today, the First Unitarian Church continues to serve as a vibrant center for worship, learning, and community engagement.
