Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, Reno
The Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, located on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, has been a cornerstone of science education and public engagement since its opening in 1963. Originally named the Fleischmann Atmospherium-Planetarium, it made history as the first U.S. planetarium to feature a 360-degree projector capable of horizon-to-horizon visuals and time-lapse weather simulations. The building itself is an architectural landmark-designed by Reno architect Raymond M. Hellmann in the form of a rare hyperbolic paraboloid-and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Beyond its distinctive structure, the planetarium has long served as an educational hub, welcoming thousands of students through field trips and immersive learning experiences. Its Full-Dome Theater continues to offer dynamic star shows and science films for the public, while temporary exhibitions keep content fresh and engaging. The facility recently expanded its reach through a partnership with Slooh Telescopes, allowing visitors to control robotic observatories in the Canary Islands and Chile from their own devices, capturing real-time images of the night sky.
Inside, the Science Store adds a hands-on layer to the experience, offering books, gadgets, toys, and space-themed gifts. With annual attendance nearing 45,000 visitors, the center remains a vital part of Reno’s cultural and educational landscape. Whether exploring the universe’s wonders or learning about local sky traditions, the Fleischmann Planetarium continues to bridge the cosmos and the community with curiosity and innovation.
