University of Nevada, Reno
The University of Nevada, Reno is the state’s oldest and most prominent public university, founded in 1874 and relocated to Reno in 1885. As Nevada’s flagship land-grant institution, it is a cornerstone of the Nevada System of Higher Education, combining academic excellence with a commitment to public outreach. With more than 21,000 students, the university supports a wide array of disciplines while serving both urban and rural communities throughout the state.
The heart of the campus lies in the southern “Q” quadrangle, a tree-lined space inspired by the University of Virginia and bordered by some of the university’s most historic buildings. Morrill Hall, completed in 1887 and named after Senator Justin Morrill, still stands as the campus’s original structure. Nearby, Lincoln Hall and Manzanita Hall-both opened in 1896-reflect the institution’s early residential life. The Mackay School of Mines, also adjacent to the quadrangle, emphasizes the university’s long-standing role in scientific and technical education.
Today, the university holds “R1” status for very high research activity, with research investments totaling $144 million in 2018. Its College of Engineering is especially recognized for earthquake simulation and structural testing through its large-scale structures lab. The School of Medicine, Nevada’s first, has become a leading provider of rural healthcare education and clinical services. The Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism adds further distinction, with six Pulitzer Prize-winning alumni.
Through its academic leadership, research achievements, and community engagement, the University of Nevada, Reno continues to shape the intellectual and civic life of the state.
