Former Residence of Hu Xueyan, Hangzhou
The Former Residence of Hu Xueyan was built in the late 19th century as the home of Hu Xueyan, a leading merchant of the Qing dynasty. Completed in 1872, it reflects his success in finance, trade, and traditional medicine, as well as his close ties with officials. The large scale and careful layout show the lifestyle of wealthy merchants of the period, and the site is now protected and open to visitors.
The residence is made up of many buildings linked by courtyards and covered walkways. The layout follows traditional Chinese design, with wooden halls, tiled roofs, and enclosed spaces that separate public and private areas. Moving through the house feels organized and calm, with each section serving a clear purpose. Visitors can see detailed wood and stone carvings on doors, beams, and screens, showing symbols of good fortune, long life, and success.
A key feature of the residence is its garden. Rocks, ponds, small bridges, and plants are placed to create quiet spaces and changing views along the paths. The garden offers a softer contrast to the formal rooms inside the house. Some rooms contain furniture and displays that explain Hu Xueyan’s life and work. Together, the buildings and garden help visitors understand how a wealthy merchant lived in the late Qing period.
