Hangzhou Museum, Hangzhou

Hangzhou Museum, Hangzhou

Hangzhou Museum opened in 2001 and covers local history from early settlements to modern times. It was previously called the Hangzhou History Museum and was renamed in 2012. The exhibitions explain how geography, waterways, and human activity shaped the area, using a clear timeline with maps and simple displays.

The first galleries present early history through archaeological finds such as pottery, tools, bronze objects, and coins, showing daily life and trade in ancient times. Later exhibits explain the city’s growth, highlighting canals, craftsmanship, and commerce, with special focus on the Southern Song period. Models and reconstructed scenes help visitors understand how streets, homes, and markets once looked.

The later sections cover social and economic changes from the late imperial era to modern times. Old photographs, written records, and everyday objects show changes in work, education, and public life. The museum is quiet and clearly laid out, allowing visitors to move at a steady pace. Directional signs and well-spaced displays make it suitable for both short visits and more detailed exploration.
