Fort Canning Park, Singapore
In 1972, the area earned its designation as Central Park when the territory once occupied by the British armed forces was merged with King George V Jubilee Park. Subsequently, on November 1, 1981, under the direction of Lee Kuan Yew, Singaporean politician and statesman, the park underwent a name change and transformation into a historical park, now known as Fort Canning Park.
Located in the heart of Singapore's Civic and Cultural District, Fort Canning Park boasts a commanding view of Orchard Road. Today, it serves as a multifaceted hub offering a wide range of recreational activities, as well as opportunities for historical exploration, education, entertainment, and cultural immersion. Additionally, it serves as a popular venue for social gatherings and events, all while contributing to the city's greenery.
What makes Fort Canning Park truly unique is its amalgamation of historical relics, lush green landscapes, and expansive lawns. This captivating blend has turned it into a vibrant center for cultural and artistic activities. Over the years, it has hosted a diverse array of outdoor events and performances, including theater festivals like Shakespeare in the Park by SRT, art festivals, starlit cinema screenings, and Ballet Under the Stars shows. From 1998 to 2007, WOMAD, Singapore's largest music festival, was a regular fixture on the park's event calendar.
In 2019, Fort Canning Park earned the honor of being the venue for Singapore's bicentennial showcase, marking 200 years since the city's founding. In an effort to preserve the area's historical heritage, three historical gardens have been painstakingly recreated: the Royal Garden, the First Botanical Garden, and Jubilee Park. Furthermore, the park has seen various enhancements, such as the addition of a heritage museum at the Fort Canning Centre, the reconstruction of an ancient spring, and improvements in accessibility.
