Getting close to Gallery 209 along River Street, look for its entrance within the row of former cotton warehouses beneath Factors Walk. The gallery occupies a renovated warehouse dating from the 1820s, so before focusing on the artwork, take a moment to notice the building itself. Inside, the exposed timber beams, rough stone walls, worn brick floors, and distinctive floating staircase preserve much of the structure’s historic character.

Opened in 1975, Gallery 209 operates as an artists’ cooperative representing more than 30 Savannah-based creators. One of the participating artists is usually working in the gallery, giving visitors the chance to ask about the techniques, materials, and inspiration behind the pieces on display.

Begin your visit on the ground floor, where the displays typically include paintings, etchings, wood engravings, photography, sculpture, pottery, and colorful raku ceramics.
