Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow

Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow

The Gallery of Modern Art is located on Royal Exchange Square and is housed in a remarkable building that matches the impressive art collection it holds. This Neo-classical structure was once the residence of William Cunninghame of Lainshaw, a prominent figure in the 18th-century tobacco industry. It was later acquired by the city and underwent significant renovations between 1827 and 1832, ultimately becoming the Royal Exchange.

Renowned architect David Hamilton led the reconstruction effort, which involved adding Corinthian pillars to the entrance on Queen Street, installing a cupola, and constructing a spacious hall at the rear of the building.

Today, the gallery is home to an exceptional assortment of contemporary art, featuring works by both local and international artists such as David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Sebastio Salgado, Ken Currie, John Bellamy, and many others. On the ground floor, temporary exhibitions are held twice a year, focusing on modern social issues such as unemployment and homelessness.

The museum places a strong emphasis on education, dedicating a floor to Education and Access. Here, visitors can engage in hands-on workshops and attend enlightening lectures conducted by artists. Additionally, there is a cafe with complimentary internet access. The library in the basement boasts an extensive collection of books related to art and artists.
