Genete Eyesus Church, Addis Ababa

Genete Eyesus Church, Addis Ababa

Genete Eyesus Church is an Ethiopian Orthodox church linked to the early 20th-century imperial period. It is often associated with the reign of Emperor Menelik II, though some accounts suggest it was completed or consecrated around the time of Empress Zewditu. The name “Genete Eyesus” means “Paradise of Jesus.” The church is still active and used for regular worship.

The building follows a traditional Ethiopian Orthodox church plan, with a circular layout and thick stone walls. At the center is the most sacred space, reserved only for priests. The interior walls are covered with painted scenes from the Bible, the life of Jesus Christ, and Ethiopian saints. These paintings use clear shapes, strong outlines, and symbolic colors, serving as visual teaching tools for the congregation.

The church grounds are usually quiet, with open areas that allow visitors to move slowly and observe daily religious life. During services, chanting and drum rhythms may be heard, especially on Sundays and major religious holidays. Modest dress and respectful behavior are expected at all times. Most visits last about 30 to 45 minutes and give visitors a direct view of living Orthodox traditions and church art.
