St. Micheal Church, Addis Ababa

St. Micheal Church, Addis Ababa

St. Michael Church was established in the late 19th to early 20th century, during a period of growing devotion to Saint Michael. According to church tradition, it began as a small prayer place used by local worshippers seeking protection, justice, and healing. As more people gathered there regularly, the community built a permanent church structure.

The building follows Orthodox design, with a circular plan, thick stone walls, and a simple exterior. Inside, the central sanctuary is closed to priests only. Wall paintings focus on Saint Michael, often shown with scales or a sword, along with biblical scenes and other saints, using clear and direct imagery.

The church’s development is closely tied to personal vows and monthly religious gatherings. Many people who believed their prayers were answered contributed labor or money to improve the building. As a result, the church developed gradually over time. Its structure still shows signs of repeated use and repair, shaped by long-term community devotion.
