Hamle 19 Public Park, Addis Ababa

Hamle 19 Public Park, Addis Ababa

Hamle 19 Public Park is a long-established public park with strong cultural and historical roots. The name “Hamle 19” refers to a date in the Ethiopian calendar linked to the feast of St. Gabriel, an important religious celebration. The park began as a private retreat for Empress Menen, wife of Emperor Haile Selassie. It was opened to the public in 1967 and later became a national park in 1975, allowing wider access to its green space.

Covering about 20 hectares, the park is known for its large trees, open lawns, and shaded areas. Many of the trees are old and provide strong natural cover, making the park feel cooler and quieter than surrounding areas. Paths cross wide grassy sections, and there is no fixed route, so visitors can walk freely or sit in one place. The setting is simple and natural, with the focus on greenery rather than monuments.

The park is widely used by local residents for walking, jogging, and meeting friends. On weekends, it becomes especially lively, with families gathering and wedding ceremonies often taking place in open sections of the grounds. Weekdays are usually calmer and better for slow walks. Most visits last between 30 and 60 minutes. For tourists, the park offers a clear look at how green spaces are used for everyday life, celebrations, and long-standing traditions.
