Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe

The Gerald Peters Gallery is one of Santa Fe’s longest-established commercial art galleries. Founded in the early 1970s, it became particularly prominent after Gerald Peters served as Georgia O’Keeffe’s exclusive dealer from 1976 until her death in 1986. Its historic program specializes in American modernism, Western art, sculpture, and paintings by members of the Taos Society of Artists. Depending on the rotating display, visitors may encounter works by O’Keeffe, modernists Max Weber and William Zorach, Western artist Charles M. Russell, or Taos painter Walter Ufer.

The gallery has also presented extensive selections of prints by Santa Fe artist Gustave Baumann. His richly colored woodcuts depict the landscapes and communities of the Southwest, with examples including “Day of the Deer Dance”, “Spring-Tesuque Valley”, and “Strangers from Hopi Land”.

Gerald Peters Contemporary introduces a markedly different perspective. Its exhibitions have included Cara Romero’s staged photographs examining contemporary Indigenous identity, Patrick Dean Hubbell’s abstract works exploring land and cultural memory, and Maurice Burns’s reinterpretations of Black life and the mythology of the American West. Sculptor Will Clift has exhibited precisely balanced works such as “Convergence”, made from carbon-fiber composite, and the cherrywood sculpture “One Another”. By displaying such contemporary experiments alongside historic Western and modernist art, the gallery allows visitors to see how established images of the American West are preserved, questioned, and reshaped by successive generations of artists.
