Wiford Gallery, Santa Fe

The Wiford Gallery is a distinctive stop for visitors who enjoy art that blends naturally with its surroundings. Established in 2002, the gallery specializes in sculpture, fountains, and other contemporary works, with particular attention to movement and organic forms. What sets it apart is not only its indoor collection but also its large outdoor sculpture garden, where artworks interact with sunlight, flowing water, changing shadows, and the desert breeze.

The garden is particularly known for the kinetic wind sculptures of Lyman Whitaker. Made from copper or stainless steel, their curved blades and balanced components rotate independently as air currents pass through them, creating constantly changing patterns. Some resemble flowers, leaves, or celestial instruments, while others take more abstract forms. Their height and movement make them easy to identify among the garden’s trees and adobe walls.

Visitors will also find Ryan Steffens’s stone “infinity fountains,” which combine natural rock with circulating water and carefully positioned lighting. Steffens preserves the stones’ irregular shapes and textures, allowing water to flow across their surfaces rather than disguising their natural character. Other represented artists demonstrate the gallery’s broader range. Swedish-born sculptor Kent Ullberg creates detailed bronze wildlife, including birds, otters, and marine animals, while Jeremiah Daniel Welsh specializes in low-relief sculpture depicting plants, wildlife, landscapes, and narrative scenes.
