Gerichtslaube (Courthouse), Potsdam

The Courthouse Arcade (Gerichtslaube) is a historic architectural structure originally built in the 13th century as part of the Old Town Hall in Berlin. This two-story red brick building, characterized by its Gothic elements, was an integral part of Berlin's medieval cityscape until it was dismantled in 1860 to make way for the construction of the new Berlin Red Town Hall.

In 1871, the Courthouse Arcade was meticulously reassembled in Babelsberg Park, Potsdam, under the direction of architect Heinrich Strack. The relocation of this medieval pergola was a gift from the townspeople of Berlin to Emperor William I, who had a particular affinity for the Middle Ages. The building was placed on Lennéhöhe, a prominent location within the park, where it continues to stand out in the landscape.

The Courthouse Arcade showcases the seamless integration of old architectural elements into modern design. Its striking cubic red-brick structure retains original features, including Gothic windows on the upper floor, which now houses a tea room. The ground floor's open hall is supported by a central pillar, echoing the tradition of public court hearings under trees. This pillar is decorated with stone reliefs depicting medieval symbols of vices and virtues, such as pigs for gluttony, eagles for greed, and sirens for anger.

Today, the Courthouse Arcade serves not only as a historical landmark but also as an unusual and picturesque venue for smaller events, such as wedding ceremonies or receptions, making it a key attraction in Potsdam’s cultural landscape. Its rich history and unique blend of the ancient and modern continue to draw visitors, offering a glimpse into the architectural and social traditions of medieval Germany.

Laid out at the behest of Friedrich William II in 1787, Potsdam's Neuer Garten (New Garden) was indeed "new" compared to the already in place Sanssouci Park.

Between 1816 and 1828, the area was modified further as an English-style, open landscape garden, with an aim to reproduce nature – trees and plants were left to grow naturally, unshaped and untrimmed. Rural life was also...  view more

By the early 1300s, a small town had formed with a town charter. By 1573 the town had around 2,000 people living there. Potsdam rose to...  view more
