Goh Ballet Theatre, Vancouver

Built in 1912 as an extension of the Royal Bank, the edifice that now houses the Goh Ballet Theater holds a rich history. Its evolution took a significant turn in 1978 when it underwent a remarkable conversion, becoming the esteemed global hub known as the Institute of Ballet. Today, this distinguished ballet academy diligently readies students for prosperous futures within the realm of dance.

Goh Ballet Academy was founded by Choo Chiat Goh and Lin Yee Goh, who came to Canada from China. Choo Chiat Goh trained at institutions like London's Royal Ballet and Beijing Dance Academy, later joining China's National Ballet. Lin Yee Goh, his spouse, also trained at Beijing Dance Academy and became ballet mistress at China's National Ballet. At the academy, Lin Yee Goh integrated Royal Academy of Dance curriculum and taught the Vaganova method she learned from Russian master Nikolai Romanchev.

The lineage continues with their daughter, Chan-hon Goh, who impressively served as a principal dancer at Canada's National Ballet for two decades. Now, she directs the academy. Chan Hon Goh also earned the esteemed Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland—an annual competition recognizing young dance talents. As the director, she offers specialized master classes, refining training, providing expert coaching, and enabling seasoned artists to mentor aspiring dancers. These sessions explore artistic dimensions beyond typical ballet instruction.

Goh Ballet's global influence shines through tours in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, China, Hong Kong, and the US. In 1994, their youth company made history as the first Canadian group at France's Rencontres Internationales de la Danse Festival, receiving praise and eight curtain calls. Since 2009, Goh Ballet has staged their own "Nutcracker," choreographed by Anna-Marie Holmes.
