Gonzalez-Jones House, St. Augustine

Gonzalez-Jones House, St. Augustine

The González-Jones House in St. Augustine, is a historic home that dates back to the First Spanish Period (1565-1763). This house is one of nine colonial structures that have survived in clusters along Marine and Saint Francis Streets, all of which were likely built after 1702 when the city was destroyed during a British siege.

Despite being extensively remodeled, the Gonzalez-Jones House in St. Augustine, Florida still retains its historic charm and significance. As one of nine colonial structures that survive in clusters along Marine and Saint Francis Streets, the house is a testament to the rich history of the city, particularly during the First and Second Spanish Periods.

Originally owned by Juan Ignacio González, a stone house already stood on the site before 1763, when it was included in Juan José Elixio de la Puente's map of the city during the transition to British rule after the Seven Years' War.

Over the years, the house was owned by several prominent families, including the Sánchez family, who were cattle ranchers during the Second Spanish Period, and the Minorcan colonists Roque Leonardy and Agueda Coll, who established an orchard in the area after abandoning the colony at New Smyrna, Florida.

The house eventually became known as the Gonzalez-Jones House, named after the Jones family who were its last full-time residents. Over the years, the house sheltered as many as eleven people, including seven adults, despite being built with only three bedrooms.

The history of the González-Jones House reflects the cultural and social changes that took place in St. Augustine over the centuries.
