The King's Bakery, St. Augustine

The King's Bakery, St. Augustine

The King's Bakery is a historic building, which was constructed during the British colonial period in the state, between 1763 and 1783. This impressive structure, made of coquina stone, was built to supply bread to the British troops quartered across the street at the St. Francis Barracks.

During the First Spanish Period, which lasted from 1565 to 1763, the St. Francis Barracks were originally used as a monastery by Franciscan friars. However, when the British arrived in St. Augustine, they seized the building and used it as a military barracks.

The bakery building, which is believed to be the only structure remaining in St. Augustine built entirely during the British period, has been used for several purposes over the years. It was used as a storeroom for flour, a military hospital, and offices.

Today, the King's Bakery is part of the St. Francis Barracks military compound. Since 1907, this compound has served as the headquarters of the Florida National Guard. In 1934, the bakery building was converted for use as a garage.

The King's Bakery is a fascinating example of the unique history and architecture of St. Augustine. Despite being over two centuries old, the building still stands strong and serves a useful purpose. Visitors to St. Augustine can appreciate the bakery's rich history and explore the surrounding military compound, which offers a glimpse into Florida's colonial past.
