Grace-Westminster United Church, Saskatoon

Grace-Westminster United Church, located on 10th Street East in Saskatoon’s Nutana neighborhood, is a cherished spiritual and architectural landmark with roots stretching back to 1882. Originally founded as Grace Methodist Church, it is Saskatoon’s oldest congregation, carrying a legacy that intertwines faith, community, and history.

The existing structure, completed in 1927 and designed by architect David Webster, reflects the Victorian Gothic style with a distinctive English Gothic touch. Built from russet brick with cream-colored horizontal banding, the church features four prominent peaks forming a Latin cross. Two towers anchor its front façade-one rising to the roofline, the other reaching two-thirds of the building's height. Arched oak doorways and matching window arches add symmetry and elegance to its entranceways.

A notable addition came in 1949 with the construction of a memorial tower honoring those who served in both World War I and World War II. Inside, the church offers a warm and reverent space, with a nave leading to a chancel separated by a large Gothic arch. A raised choir loft serves as the visual and spiritual centerpiece. The interior also includes a large balcony and flat roof, blending function with form.

Heritage is central to Grace-Westminster. The site was reserved for Methodist use in 1884, with pioneers like Grace Fletcher and James M. Eby helping establish the congregation. A plaque added in 1955 commemorates the original land purchase.

Stained-glass windows throughout the church pay tribute to founding families and individuals like C. M. Miners, who oversaw construction. A memorial courtyard, created in 2000, links past and present with named bricks and interpretive signage that share the church’s evolving story.

Today, Grace-Westminster United Church continues to welcome all for worship, fellowship, and community service-standing as both a beacon of tradition and a space of belonging for over a century.
