Graham Oliver Gallery, Salisbury

Graham Oliver Gallery is an independent art gallery established in 1988 by artist Graham Oliver, best known for expressive pastel landscapes and city views. The gallery shows his original paintings and changing displays, highlighting his use of colour, texture, and landscape subjects.

Oliver works mainly with soft pastels on fine-surface Sait sandpaper, a durable material that lets him build and adjust layers of colour. He avoids fixative sprays, preferring to preserve the natural powdery surface of the pastel and protect finished works through careful framing behind glass. In workshops, he has also shared practical tips, including cleaning muddy pastel sticks in a sealed container with ground rice.

His teaching process includes composition and mark-making, colour choice, laying the foundation, blending, and final orchestration with details, highlights, texture, and clean-up. While earlier works were more closely mapped to real scenery, later landscapes often use rhythm, pattern, and looser mark-making to suggest mood.
