Trinity Hospital, Salisbury

Trinity Hospital is one of the oldest charitable foundations in the area, established during the 14th century through the generosity of Agnes Bottenham, a wealthy local businesswoman and landowner. Despite its name, it was a medieval almshouse for elderly residents in need and, at times, sick travellers. Local tradition links its founding to Bottenham’s wish for atonement, and its charitable work has continued for more than 600 years.

The buildings seen today date mainly from a complete rebuilding carried out between 1702 and 1705. The Grade I listed Queen Anne complex has red-brick façades, sash windows, tiled roofs, and a chapel at its centre. The courtyard contains an 1809 cast-lead water pump once used for local water supply.

Trinity Hospital continues to serve its original purpose by providing sheltered housing, while also acting as the headquarters of the Salisbury City Almshouse and Welfare Charities. Private areas are closed, but the exterior and courtyard show its long charitable history. The Mayor traditionally served as its Master, linking the charity closely with civic life.
