Grand Mosque, Colombo
The Grand Mosque is one of the oldest Islamic religious sites in the country. Its history goes back more than 1,200 years and is linked to early Arab traders who settled in the area. It is widely regarded as the first mosque in Colombo. Although the site is very old, the present building was rebuilt in the mid-20th century, around the 1950s, to meet the needs of a larger Muslim community. The mosque is still used every day for prayer, religious teaching, and community activities, including those connected with the Al-Madrasathul Hameedia school.
The building has a simple, practical design shaped by several rebuilding phases. The main prayer hall is large and open for Friday prayers and festivals. Domes and arches reflect Islamic traditions, while local materials add a regional look. Decoration is limited to symmetry and calligraphy, and the interior is orderly, with carpets arranged in straight rows for prayer.
Visitors are usually welcome outside prayer times. Shoes must be removed before entering, and modest clothing is required. The mosque is open day and night but is busiest during Friday midday prayers and during Ramadan. Access for non-Muslims or women may be limited in some areas, depending on the time and activities. For tourists, a visit helps explain daily Islamic practices and the long history of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka.
