Sri Ponnambalawaneswaram Temple, Colombo

Sri Ponnambalawaneswaram Temple, Colombo

The Sri Ponnambalawaneswaram Temple is a revered Hindu sanctuary, fashioned from resilient granite in an awe-inspiring architectural manner. Among the scant few temples crafted entirely from granite, this holds a distinguished place. Owing to its stone construction, the interior remains dim, with only the flickering flames of oil lamps offering light. As you traverse the wooden doors, synchronized chants and the melodious clang of bells envelop your senses. Adorned with intricately carved stone pillars and walls, this temple boasts a majestic gopuram, exquisite arches, and adorned pillars. Sculpted walls depict an array of motifs, from graceful swans and peacocks to revered deities like Shiva, alongside goddesses and sacred cows.

The Sri Ponnambalawaneswaram Temple, erected during the British colonial era in Sri Lanka, bears testimony to the vision of Ponnambalam Mudaliyar, who sacrificed his life in the struggle for independence, aspiring to establish a haven for Hindu worship. Thus, a modest shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva was erected, showcasing ancient Dravidian architectural finesse. In 1905, Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan, scion of Ponnambalam Mudaliyar and a prominent figure in Ceylon's legal and political arena, inherited and embellished the temple, leaving behind the grand edifice we behold today.

Beyond the routine observance of five Kala poojas, the temple hosts special ceremonies on auspicious occasions such as Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Arudra darshan, and Navaratri. The annual festivities commence on the 10th day of Panguni, culminating on Panguni Uthiram. Notably, during these celebrations, processions featuring the deities Somaskandar, Chandikeswarar, Murugan with Valli Devasena grace the streets, drawn predominantly by the strength of women devotees.
