Greenwood Great House, Montego Bay

Greenwood Great House, Montego Bay

Constructed in the late 1700s by Richard Barrett, cousin of renowned poet Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, the Greenwood Great House showcases the opulent lifestyle of Jamaica's elite during the Victorian era. As one of the earliest settlements in Jamaica, Greenwood Great House holds a prominent place in the island's heritage. Stepping inside, visitors are transported back in time as they explore the meticulously preserved interiors, including the old ballroom where a phonograph plays tunes reminiscent of a bygone era.

One of the highlights of a tour of Greenwood Great House is its remarkable collection of musical instruments, reputed to be the largest on the island, as well as a plantation books library. Surviving the tumultuous slave rebellion of 1831 unscathed, the house offers a rare opportunity to admire period furnishings and architectural features.

Surrounded by lush grounds adorned with majestic mature trees, flowering plants, and fruit trees, Greenwood Great House exudes tranquility and charm. Stone and grassed pathways wind through the gardens, leading visitors to a multi-tiered grassed terrace perfect for leisurely strolls or quiet contemplation.

Adding to the allure of Greenwood Great House are its antique horse-drawn carriages, including a hearse and mail wagon, displayed in a covered pavilion. Perched atop a hillside, the house commands a commanding presence, with its imposing facade towering above the meticulously landscaped front garden. In addition to the main house, Greenwood Great House boasts several outbuildings, including a guest house and a gift shop, offering visitors a comprehensive experience of Jamaica's colonial heritage.
