Ground Zero, Hiroshima
Ground Zero holds profound significance as the hypocenter of the devastating atomic bombing. Located on a quiet side street near the Atomic Bomb Dome, this marked site serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of nuclear warfare.
At this otherwise unassuming location, a stone plaque marks the point directly beneath the bomb’s detonation. The bomb exploded approximately 600 meters above Shima Hospital, which once occupied this site. The hospital and the surrounding buildings were completely destroyed, and nearly everyone in the immediate area was killed. The original hospital, a modern two-story brick structure built in 1933, was later reconstructed, and a medical clinic continues to operate nearby today. Although the bomb had been aimed at the distinctive T-shaped Aioi Bridge, it drifted away from its intended target before detonating above the hospital.
The explosion forever altered the course of history and left an indelible mark on Hiroshima and its people. Visiting the hypocenter can evoke a wide range of emotions. The sense of loss and tragedy is palpable as visitors stand near the place where countless lives were suddenly and irrevocably changed. The experience also invites visitors to reflect on humanity’s choices, the suffering those choices can cause, and the urgent need to seek peaceful solutions to conflict.
