Grüneburgpark, Frankfurt

Grüneburgpark, Frankfurt

Situated in Frankfurt's West End, Grüneburgpark is a renowned 29-hectare green space cherished by locals for relaxation and leisure. Its close proximity to two universities has made it a favored spot for jogging and rollerblading. Students and visitors alike can savor the serene atmosphere amidst meticulously designed gardens.

The park derives its name from the Green Castle that once graced this location back in the 14th century. Heinrich von Bethmann Metzler, a banker, acquired the land in 1837 and fashioned a garden. During that era, intellectuals such as Wolfgang von Goethe and Bettina von Arnim frequented this park. Subsequently, the Rothschild family acquired the property and commissioned the construction of a mansion resembling the French Loire castles. The landscaping was entrusted to the renowned botanist Heinrich Siesmayer, who transformed the land into an English country garden. When the Nazis rose to power, the city of Frankfurt assumed ownership of the property, and the Rothschild palace was completely destroyed during World War II.

In 2005, the Korean government generously gifted a Korean garden, along with two pavilions and a reflecting pool, to the city. This new garden was meticulously crafted by some of Korea's finest botanists, featuring four distinct sections symbolizing the four seasons.

Visitors seeking a peaceful respite from busy sightseeing or shopping excursions will find solace in a leisurely stroll or picnic within Grüneburg Park.

Why You Should Visit:
Open day and night for the public; perfect location for a picnic and hangout with friends, a run or open-air theatre in the summers.
