Günthersburgpark, Frankfurt

Günthersburgpark, Frankfurt

Günthersburgpark, located in the Nordend-Ost district of Frankfurt am Main, is a green oasis with an intriguing history. Established in 1837 by the banker Carl Mayer von Rothschild, this park has welcomed the public since 1892.

The park, originally called Ossenau in 1189, changed owners over the years, including the Glauburg family. In 1690, Johann Jacob Günther built Günthersburg, a small castle. Later, the Rothschild family transformed it into an English-style garden with Villa Günthersburg and an orangery. In 1886, Carl Mayer von Rothschild donated it to Frankfurt as a public park, officially opening on June 26, 1892, and later expanded in 1905.

Today, the park spans 7.4 hectares and boasts a lush collection of old, dense trees, along with ample open meadow areas to the north. An additional 4 hectares of meadow space was recently added north of Weidenbornstrasse. For the younger visitors, there is an adventure playground and water features. In the western section of the park, a striking larger-than-life bull sculpture crafted from beaten copper sheet stands tall. This sculpture, dating back to 1910, was designed by Fritz Boehle (1873–1916).

At the southern entrance of the park, you'll encounter "The Sower," a bronze sculpture created by the Belgian painter and sculptor Constantin Meunier (1831–1905) in 1890. Frankfurt acquired this remarkable piece in 1906, and it has graced Günthersburg Park since 1915. Like "The Dock Worker" statue situated on the Peace Bridge in Frankfurt, "The Sower" is also a generous gift from Leo Gans, who was an entrepreneur and the head of the Cassella Works at the time.

Why You Should Visit:
Regardless of whether you see it as "just a nice green space" or as picturesque setting (especially in the autumn), a walk here is extremely cool and pleasant.
