Het Rabot, Ghent

Het Rabot, Ghent

Het Rabot is a historic two-towered fortified gateway that was once part of the city walls of old Ghent. Located to the northwest of the city's old center, Het Rabot can be reached by a pleasant walk along the Lieve canal, which offers a charming view of various architectural styles along the way. Although the remains of this fortress are not open to the public, they are a striking sight from the outside, making the short journey worthwhile.

The Rabot is a fortified bridge with a sluice at the strategic point where the River Lieve crosses the city moat. This area was historically a vulnerable spot in Ghent’s defenses, and in 1488, Maximilian of Austria exploited this weakness to capture the city. Following a 40-day siege, the imperial army was forced to retreat. In response, Ghent’s city councilors decided to strengthen the city's defenses by constructing a stronghold with two towers that also served as a sluice on the Lieve. The construction of Het Rabot began in 1489 and was completed in 1491. Its defensive design allowed the city to flood surrounding areas during times of need, thereby aiding in the defense of Ghent.

Over time, Het Rabot lost its military significance and was repurposed for various uses, including as an ammunition depot, an icehouse, and a center for collecting municipal patents. In 1860, part of Het Rabot was demolished to widen the passageway over the Lieve. The structure has since been restored and preserved as a historical monument.

Today, Het Rabot stands at the edge of the old town, juxtaposed with less visually appealing modern buildings from the 1950s, which somewhat detract from its historic charm. Nevertheless, it remains an important and visually appealing reminder of Ghent’s medieval past.
