Holy Trinity Cathedral, Karachi

Holy Trinity Cathedral is one of Karachi’s oldest Anglican churches and a landmark of the city’s colonial-era heritage. While its congregation was established in 1844, construction of the cathedral began in 1852, and the building was consecrated in 1855 to serve the growing Anglican community during British rule.

Built with financial support from the East India Company and public subscriptions, it later became the cathedral church of the Diocese of Karachi following the formation of the Church of Pakistan in 1970. Designed by Captain John Hill of the Bombay Engineers, the cathedral was built in the Romanesque Revival style rather than Gothic. Constructed from locally quarried, buff-colored Gizri limestone, it features rounded arches, buttresses, substantial masonry walls, and a prominent square tower. The tower originally rose approximately 150 feet and served as a lighthouse for ships approaching the harbor. Because of structural concerns caused by wind vibrations, its upper two tiers were removed in 1904, giving the tower its present appearance. Inside, visitors can see historic stained-glass windows, memorials, and other features connected with the cathedral’s long history. Holy Trinity Cathedral remains an active place of worship and a center for the local Christian community. It hosts regular religious services, Christmas and Easter celebrations, charitable activities, and community events.

The cathedral also preserves memorials connected with the colonial period. Its Romanesque architecture, surviving stained glass, historic stonework, and unusual former lighthouse tower provide visitors with insights into the development of Karachi’s Anglican community and its multicultural religious heritage.
