National Academy of Performing Arts, Karachi

The National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) is Pakistan’s national academy specializing in professional theatre and music education. Established in 2004 as a nonprofit Section 42 company, it was founded to preserve cultural traditions, encourage creative expression, and provide formal training for actors, directors, playwrights, musicians, and students of theatre production. Its founding president was actor, director, and broadcaster Zia Mohyeddin, who later served as president emeritus.

NAPA operates within the historic Hindu Gymkhana, completed in 1925, combining contemporary arts education with the continuing use of an important colonial-era heritage building. Designed by Agha Ahmed Hussain, the former gymkhana is an early example of Mughal Revival architecture. Its exterior is faced mainly with dressed Gizri stone and includes domed chhatris, arches, projecting chajjas, ornamental brackets, carved details, and some elements made from Jodhpur stone. After repairs and adaptation for academy use, the site was equipped with classrooms, rehearsal studios, music-training rooms, a recording studio, a library, technical facilities, and performance spaces. The campus includes the professionally equipped Zia Mohyeddin Theatre, where students perform regularly.

Beyond its educational role, NAPA has developed into an active center for theatre and music. Its two principal academic departments offer structured training in acting, direction, movement, improvisation, voice, theatre history, stagecraft, lighting, production, vocal music, and instrumental performance. The academy also organizes repertory productions, music ensembles, workshops, festivals, film screenings, lectures, and public discussions, bringing students, professional artists, and audiences together while supporting inherited musical and dramatic traditions alongside contemporary approaches to performance across Pakistan.
