Governor House, Karachi

Governor House is the official residence of the Governor of Sindh and a building closely connected with the political history of Pakistan.

The present structure was begun in 1936 and completed in 1939, replacing an earlier Government House built for Sir Charles Napier in 1843. Designed by architect R. T. Russell, the new residence was first occupied by Sir Lancelot Graham, the first Governor of Sindh. Following independence in August 1947, the building became the official residence of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s first Governor-General. Jinnah lived and worked here until his death on September 11, 1948; his separate Flagstaff House was never used by him as a residence after independence. The Governor House therefore has a direct connection with the earliest period of the new state and with Jinnah’s final year in office. The complex contains formal reception and administrative spaces used for official meetings, ceremonies, and state functions, together with extensive grounds surrounding the main residence.

After serving successively as the residence of Pakistan’s Governors-General and, for a period, its presidents, the property again became the residence of the Governor of Sindh following the restoration of the province in the 1970s. It continues to function as an active government property rather than a conventional museum, so public access may be restricted or available only for designated events and visits.
