Holzgraben Street, Aachen

Holzgraben Street, Aachen

This pedestrian street is a short but useful link between the old town area and modern shopping zones. Its name comes from a wooden water channel that once marked the edge of medieval settlement. Today, the street is fully paved and made for walking, with people passing through most of the day. It is compact and easy to walk, even when it gets busy.

The buildings along the street show different phases of construction. Some older houses with narrow fronts stand next to simpler buildings from the 1950s and 1960s, built after heavy war damage. Most structures are three to four stories high and have a clear, practical layout. Shops are usually on the ground floor, while offices or apartments are found above.

The street is mainly used for everyday shopping, with clothing and shoe stores, pharmacies, bookshops, and small service businesses. A few bakeries and cafés allow for short breaks. As a pedestrian-only area, it feels calm and comfortable to walk through and is used more as a passage than a place to stay for long.
