House of Flowers, Belgrade

House of Flowers, Belgrade

The House of Flowers, situated on the grounds of the Museum of Yugoslav History in Dedinje, Belgrade, serves as the final resting place for Josip Broz Tito (1892–1980), the former President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and his wife, Jovanka Broz (1924–2013). Designed by architect Stjepan Kralj, the House of Flowers was constructed in 1975 as a winter garden that provided spaces for both work and relaxation for Tito, spanning an area of 902 square meters (9,710 square feet) near his residence.

The name "House of Flowers" originated from the numerous flowers that once surrounded Tito's tomb. However, following the disintegration of Yugoslavia, the flowers were replaced by white rocks. During Tito's lifetime, the building was affectionately referred to as the "flower shop" and functioned as an auxiliary office with a covered garden.

The structure is divided into three parts: the central area, which was initially a flower garden, and two wide corridors running parallel on either side. A terrace on the opposite side of the entrance offers a view of Belgrade. In line with Tito's wishes, he was interred in the central part of the House of Flowers in May 1980, and Jovanka Broz was laid to rest beside him in 2013.

The House of Flowers also hosts permanent exhibitions that display Relays of Youth from the period after 1957, marking the celebration of Youth Day on 25 May. The exhibitions include written messages Tito received with the relays, exchanged batons, photographs of people carrying them, tickets, programs of rallies, and other related materials.

Nomadic tribes inhabited the area as far back as 20,000 to 50,000 years ago. Some of these may have been Neanderthals rather than modern humans. By the sixth century BC, the Vinca culture...  view more
