House with Atlants, Odessa

The House with Atlants is one of Odessa’s most striking architectural landmarks, admired for its dramatic façade and imposing sculptural figures. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, this richly decorated building stands along Gogol Street, a boulevard known for its elegant historic residences. Designed in the Art Nouveau (Russian Modern) style, the structure quickly became a symbol of Odessa’s architectural flair and its embrace of European artistic trends. Its name comes from the powerful stone figures, the Atlants, positioned at the entrance, appearing to support the building on their backs.

These sculpted figures were created in the 1900s by architects Lev Vlodek and Semyon Landesman and sculptor T. L. Fishel. They represent an ancient mythological motif often found in grand European architecture, but in Odessa, they gained a distinct identity. The Atlants are muscular, expressive, and deeply detailed—each one carved with a sense of strain and movement, turning the façade into a theatrical scene. Their presence gave the building a mythical aura and earned it a place among the city’s most photographed sites.

Inside, the house preserves ornate staircases, stucco decoration, and elegant hallways that reflect its original role as an upscale apartment residence. Although not open to regular public tours, the exterior alone continues to attract architecture lovers, historians, and curious visitors drawn by its sculptural drama.
