Hovenring, Eindhoven
The Hovenring in Eindhoven is a remarkable engineering feat and the first suspended cycle path of its kind in the world. Conceived in 2008 as a solution to increasing traffic congestion between Eindhoven and Veldhoven, the project aimed to enhance both traffic flow and safety by fully separating motorized and bicycle traffic. The existing roundabout at the crossing of Heerbaan and Meerenakkerweg (Heistraat) was converted into a standard intersection for vehicles, necessitating a new approach for cyclists.
Seeking an innovative and visually striking solution in line with the Brainport top technology region’s ambitions, the Eindhoven city council opted for a unique suspended cycle path. Designed by the IPV Delft design agency, the Hovenring consists of a circular bridge supported by a central pylon with suspension cables. The name "Hovenring" was selected through a public competition and references Eindhoven, Veldhoven, and Meerhoven, while also symbolizing the illuminated ring and central needle structure that enhance its nighttime visibility. The lighting elements further reflect Eindhoven’s unofficial designation as the “city of lights.”
Construction commenced on 11 February 2011, and the initial opening took place on 30 December 2011. However, shortly after, the structure was temporarily closed due to vibrations in the suspension cables. After necessary adjustments, the Hovenring was officially opened to the public on 29 June 2012, providing a safe and futuristic cycling route for commuters and reinforcing Eindhoven’s reputation as a hub for technological innovation and urban design excellence.
