Iakovos Kambanellis Theatre Museum, Naxos

Iakovos Kambanellis Theatre Museum, Naxos

The Iakovos Kambanellis Theatre Museum, a tribute to the renowned playwright's legacy, stands as a cultural treasure in his birthplace, Naxos. Established in the summer of 2016, this museum is the outcome of a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Naxos and the Lesser Cyclades and the South Aegean Region. Situated within a renovated historical stone building in the heart of Chora, Naxos' main town, the museum finds its roots in the Grotta district where Kambanellis spent his formative years.

A profound homage to Iakovos Kambanellis' life and work, the museum is enriched by his daughter, Katerina Kambanelli's, generous contribution. Among the treasures she has bestowed upon the museum are an array of personal effects that offer insights into the playwright's world. Archival materials, including manuscripts and documents, shed light on his creative process and evolution as a writer. His meticulously preserved office, replete with his personal library, stands as a testament to his intellectual pursuits and literary achievements.

Symbolic of Kambanellis' recognition within academia, the museum showcases two academic robes worn during his honorary doctorate award ceremonies from the University of Cyprus (1996) and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1999). The display also encompasses various accolades, including the Academy of Athens medal and the award from the President of the Hellenic Republic. These medals and plaques attest to his impact on the Greek cultural landscape.

The museum's offerings extend beyond static displays. Playbills, performance programs, and set and costume sketches provide a glimpse into the world of theatrical production, showcasing the collaborative nature of his work. Portraits of the writer and his own pencil drawings and art objects reveal his multifaceted creative expression.
