Iglesia y Convento San Francisco (Church and Convent of San Francisco), Cordoba

Iglesia y Convento San Francisco (Church and Convent of San Francisco), Cordoba (must see)

Iglesia y Convento San Francisco is one of the historic Franciscan religious complexes in the old centre, closely linked to the early development of Catholic life, education, and memory in the region. The Franciscan presence here dates to the colonial period. Tradition links the early cloisters with San Francisco Solano, who is remembered for using song and a rabel in his missionary work.

The present church was begun in 1796 and consecrated in 1813. Its exterior has a restrained neoclassical character, with balanced proportions and an Italian-influenced façade. Inside, the church has religious decoration, paintings, devotional objects, and carved choir stalls traditionally linked to Indigenous artisans, showing a blend of European religious design and local craftsmanship.

The complex also preserves objects connected with major figures in Argentine religious and political history. Among them are the wooden armchair and kneeler used by Fray Mamerto Esquiú, a Franciscan friar, bishop, and respected 19th-century speaker remembered for his role after the signing of the Argentine Constitution in 1853. The church also preserves memory of the colonial foundation period, with a plaque honoring Cabrera’s companions and crypts linked to early colonial figures.

For tourists, the site offers more than a view of a historic church. It brings together missionary legend, colonial architecture, sacred art, Indigenous craftsmanship, national memory, and burial traditions. The convent areas add further interest, especially the old refectory and Salón De Profundis. Parts of the historic convent now sit beside modern commercial spaces, creating a clear contrast between monastic life and present-day urban activity.
